Development of Power Sector in Ladakh

1964-1969

  • In 1964, 1X 2KW Pico Hydel powerhouse was installed at Nurla(Snyongla) village.
  • In 1966-67, for the first time in Ladakh J&K Minerals has set up 20 KVA DG set at Leh town.
  • In 1969 the 20 KVA DG set of Leh town was upgraded / augmented gradually to 100 KVA and more.

1970-1984

  • In 1970s electricity was made available to the people of Kargil town by commissioning of 25 KVA DG set (Make Leyland) later it was augmented/added with passage of time in both the towns.
  • In 1975 a 25KVA DG set was installed to electrify HemisGonpa&Chomoling.
  • In 1975 a Jyoti make micro hydel powerhouse was installed at Temisgam (Tingmosgang) andKhalsivillage, 5KW in each village.
  • In 1976-77 a 60KVA DG set was installed to electrify ThiksayGonpa and village.
  • 1 MW DG station at PDD Choglamsarinstalled in the year 1977
  • 1 MW Leh in 1996
  • 8X750 KVA DG sets installed in year 1994 at Choglamar DG station.

1985-2000

  • Stakna (2X2MW) at Leh commissioned in 1986 supplying power to Leh town and nearby villages.
  • Summor (2X0.05MW) at Nobra commissioned in 1993.
  • Basgo (3X0.0150MW) at Leh commissioned in 1994.
  • Hunder (2X0.2MW) at Nobra commissioned in 1995.
  • In 1987, 1 Megawatt DG Station at Kurbathang was commissioned and few small GD Stations were created in rural areas too for providing electricity to the rural people. Later 1 Megawatt DG Station was augmented to 2 Megawatt.
  • 2X750KVA DG sets at Leh Powerhouse in the year 1994
  • In 1995, 3x1.25MW Iqbal MHP Kargil was commissioned and Hydroelectricity was made available to the town area of Kargil.
  • 8 X 750KVA DG sets installed at Choglamsar in the year 1998

2001-2012

  • Igo-Marcellong (2X1.5MW) at Leh commissioned in 2005.
  • 3 X 1500 MVA DG sets installed at 1 MW old DG station Choglamsarin 2006.
  • In 2007 with increasing of population and settlement of rural people in town,resulting increase in demand of power, 2x750 KVA DG sets were added at 2 MW station and later again added with3x1500 KVA DG sets.
  • In 2011, 4x11 MW Chutuk HEP was commissioned by NHPC and provided power supply to Kargil town and adjoining area through 2X6.3MVA,66/11 kV Sub-Stationsof Kargil district.
  • 3x1500KVA DG sets installed and commissioned in both Leh and Kargil districts in the year 2010.
  • In 2012, 3x15 MW Nimoo-Basgo HEP was commissioned by NHPC and provided power supply to Leh town and adjoining area through 2x6.3 MVA, 66/11 kV Receiving Sub-Station Leh.

2013-2017

  • Commissioning of New 6Nos,6.3MVA, 66/11KV Substations in Leh district, and 05 Nos in Kargil district constructed under RGGVY scheme by NHPC as Project Implementing Agency/Executing Agency. .
  • In 2019, whole Kargil District except Zanskar Area got connected with Northern Grid and getting reliable power supply and changed the livelihood of people of the District.
  • During the year 2012-13, all the 66/11KV sub-stations of Kargil district having transformer capacities of 1x6.3MVAGramthang,1x6.3MVA Sankoo,1x6.3MVA Shargol and 1x6.3MVAKhangral were commissioned for providing power supply to the area and electrified the leftover un-electrified/far-flung areas under different schemes.
  • Subsequently during the same year 2012-13,all the 66/11KV sub-stations of Leh district having transformer capacities of 1x6.3MVAAlchi, 1x6.3MVA Basgo, 1x6.3MVA Hemya, 1X6.3MVAKhalsi, 2x6.3MVA Kharu and 2X6.3MVA ss Leh were commissioned for providing power supply to the area and further electrification of leftover un-electrified/far-flung areas under different schemes.
  • Post commissioning of these Stations, both the distribution divisions of Leh & Kargil have phased out some DG sets from the villages as these villages have been connected with hydel supply from Chutuk and Nimoo-BasgoHePs.

2019-2022

  • Restructuring and unbundling of J&K Power Development Department during FY 2019-20, The J&K Reorganization Act, 2019 was enacted by the Parliament of India on 9th August, 2019 wherein the State of Jammu and Kashmir was divided into Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir & Union Territory of Ladakh. As per Section 85(1) of J&K Reorganization Act, 2019, the Central Government may by order, establish one or more Advisory Committees within a period of 90 days from the appointed day, for the purposes of:
  • Apportionment of assets, rights and liabilities of the companies and corporations constituted for the existing State of Jammu and Kashmir between Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir and Union territory of Ladakh.
  • Issues relating to Continuance of arrangements in regard to generation and supply of electric power and supply of water
  • As per State Administrative Council Decision No 258/22/2019 dated 22.10.2019 followed by Govt Order No:191-PDD of 2019 dated 23.10.2019 the J&K Power Development Department has been unbundled and corporatized into 5 companies namely J&K Power Corporation Ltd (JKPCL), J&K Power Transmission Corporation Ltd. (JKPTCL), Jammu Power Distribution Corporation Ltd. (JPDCL), Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Ltd. (KPDCL) and Ladakh Power Corporation Ltd. (LPCL). LPCL has been formed exclusively for UT of Ladakh. The remaining four companies are for the Transmission and Distribution Sectors of UT of J&K. These companies have been registered and the transition towards corporate structure is under process.
  • During the year 2021-22, 2x10MVA, 66/11 kV Receiving Sub-Station Drass&1x6.3MVA, 66/11 kV Receiving Sub-Station Chuchot under PMDP Rural were commissioned for providing grid supply power supply to the area and electrified leftover un-electrified/far-flung areas under different schemes.
  • In December 2021, 1X3.15MVA, 33/11KV SubstationDiskitconstructed under DDUGJY scheme was commissioned on no load.
  • In November 2022, 1x6.3MVA, 66/11kV Receiving Sub-Station Lungmar, Leh under PMDP Urban were commissioned for providing power supply to the town area of Leh and Kargil districts.
  • In October 2022, 1X3.15MVA, 33/11KV Substation Pinchimikwas commissioned on No load.
  • Various Un-electrified Villages of Leh and Kargil districts are connected with Grid supply under various Centrally Sponsored schemes DDUGJY.
